"What's going on?" Trent asked as he came into Hayley's through the back door. The front had said "Special Party, closed", but he didn't remember being told about anything. It was a week and a half before his own, so that wasn't it.
"Oh, not much," Hayley said, as innocently as possible while hanging up a sign that said "Happy Birthday". Trent squinted at it suspiciously.
"You're not celebrating my birthday a week and a half early, are you?" Trent asked, folding his arms.
"And why would I do anything like that?" Hayley responded, stepping back to look at the sign. A woman working on table decorations snickered. Another woman, hanging decorations over the windows flashed them a grin.
While Trent didn't recognize the first woman, he did recognize the second one. "Jade?"
Jade was one of Hayley's and Rocky's 'friends', one of the Tomorrow People. He could have sworn she wasn't there a half an hour before, when Kira had called him to ask him about the research project for World Civ. Of course, with her abilities, she didn't have to be there a half hour before. She'd probably come from London or something like that, but she looked very cheerful for somebody whose body clock was eight hours off.
Assuming she hadn't been spending the week in San Francisco, or whatever. Trent had given up trying to guess where any of the Tomorrow People might be, any given day. She just grinned at him from where she was balancing on the ladder.
He looked around. Rocky wasn't there for the moment, but Trent suspected that if he had been somewhere nearby, Hayley would have warned him off. So, no hints there. Or maybe he was out getting supplies.
"This would be?" the woman working on decorations asked. Someone knocked on the front door. "Should I get that?"
"It's okay, Greer," Hayley said. "Trent Fernandez, Greer Lewis. Friend of Rocky's."
"Oh," Trent said, "You're a-"
"Not a Tomorrow Person," Greer corrected with a smile. "A friend of Rocky's. We met under some... unusual circumstances."
"Greer's visiting from England, where she lives," Hayley said, as she crossed to the 'bar'.
Trent thought Greer looked too cheerful for someone who was also eight hours off her body clock, though she seemed at least a little tired. "Chicago, actually, I moved there two years ago. I'd been in London a bit too long."
Not eight hours off then, more like two. That was more reasonable, though Trent had to wonder what in the heck was going on.
"I thought you'd gone to meet Kira in the library?" Hayley asked. "You don't have to work here when you're trying to pass school."
"Nah," Trent said, "I'll just call Kira and help you out."
"Oh," Hayley said, blinking. "Okay. There are party hats in the box next to the stage. Four to a table, please."
Maybe it wasn't his birthday, after all. Maybe it was a Tomorrow Person's, and they'd decided to hold it at Hayley's. It was a bit of a big party, but Trent guessed that if you had friends throughout the world who could teleport, and you had a lot of friends, you'd need tables. And birthday hats.
He felt bad for being so suspicious. "So, where's Rocky?" he asked, to make sure.
"Small crisis about Iz," Hayley said, naming Rocky's little daughter. "I guess she and Lucas and Ian were on a playdate or something, and something went wrong."
"Lucas and Ian?" Trent said, trying to place the names. "Those are Rangers' kids, aren't they?" He recalled vaguely that Ian was biracial, but he didn't remember other than that.
"Yep," Hayley said. "While you're here, could you grab the apple juice from by the bar?"
Trent did so. "So, whose birthday is it?" he asked, handing the box full of apple juice to her.
Hayley smiled. "A friend's. What, did you think we were going to give you a surprise birthday party a week and a half early?" she teased.
"Well, Blake told me that they did that to Cam," Trent said. "It wouldn't be the first time."
Rocky flashed back in. "What's the topic of conversation? Oh, hi, Trent," Rocky said, a bag full of groceries. "Sorry this took so long, I swear Ian's hyper sensitive."
"That's okay, and we were talking Ranger surprise parties," Hayley said.
"Oh, you mean the one Trini and the Bradley brothers pulled on Cam because he wouldn't stop coding last year?" Rocky asked.
"That's what Mr. Paranoid over here was talking about too," Hayley replied, taking the bag. "Really. If it was his birthday, would I have him helping set up?"
"Well, if you wanted to seem less suspicious," Rocky teased. "So, Trent, I'm sure you've got better things to do than help us set up for a birthday party. Like, homework?"
"You're trying to divert me," Trent told him, wondering why nobody would tell him whose birthday they were celebrating.
"Well, yes," Rocky said. "But it's because Tommy says you've been all work and no play." He grinned. "And you and Kira deserve to have some time together."
"You are so trying to pull a surprise birthday party," Trent muttered.
"Hey, Greer, you feeling better?" Rocky asked. "Trent, have you met Greer Lewis? She's special."
"Don't worry, Trent," Greer said, "I've had my 25th birthday celebrated the last five years. Tomorrow People are an odd bunch in any dimension." She rolled her eyes dramatically. "Yes, I'm fine. Accidental trans-dimensional transit and all."
"Oh," Trent said. "Um. Yeah."
"Why don't I take Trent to... well, where are you supposed to be?" Rocky asked. "Tommy's?"
"I'll just help you set up for the birthday party," Trent said. "I want to know whose it is, and I'm not leaving until I do."
Rocky and Hayley looked at each other in that silent way that meant that they were telepathing. "Yours," they answered at once, sheepishly.
"I knew it," Trent said. "You were going to try to pull the same thing the Bradleys did." He grinned.
"Never underestimate normal people," Greer said, tucking her ear back behind her ear. "So, who gets to break the news to everybody that the surprise party is no longer a surprise party?"
Rocky and Hayley pointed at each other, and Jade laughed from up on her ladder.
"So busted," Greer said in amusement. "Happy very early birthday, Trent. I'm glad to meet you. Briefly."
Trent grinned too. "Thanks."
As he watched Rocky and Hayley try to reconfigure the party, he started to laugh. This would probably be the best birthday - early or otherwise - he'd ever had.
