Fic: Live Long Enough To Dream (Tomorrow's Future)
I was not intending this one, either, but here goes. It's Greer Lewis, Tomorrow's Future.
Title: Live Long Enough To Dream
Author: EstiRose
Fandom: Highlander (Tomorrow's Future universe)
Rating: 8+
Summary: Greer is not powerful enough to be The One.
Wordcount: 622
In the end, there could be only one. That was a phrase any Immortal who had a teacher knew, and Greer had known it even before that. There were advantages and disadvantages to being a Watcher before one was Immortal; this was probably one small advantage. A very small advantage. She was fortunate enough to have had a teacher, though Alberta hadn't had a chance to teach her too much before she'd taken her first head. She was sure that Leland had chosen to lose to her for a reason; to the day she died, she'd never understand why, though she carried his Quickening in her. Perhaps it had been to make Alberta reject her, though he hadn't known that Greer had been a Watcher.
Whatever reason he had chosen would stay locked up forever. She didn't wish to understand him other than being her first head, the reason she'd been cast out on her own. A quick and easy death before she'd gotten to Duncan. And even he hadn't taught her much, really, compared to what was in his head.
So, for whatever reason, she was still alive. Gotten lucky, really. She and Alberta had found one another again, and so she was slowly learning how to survive. Jeremy, too, wonderful Jeremy Boulder who had meant to be her first teacher, had he not died slowly before she'd nearly blown her cover. The two of them loved her in their own ways, she was sure, and she was lucky to have them.
But she would not be The One. She would not survive to the end. Which didn't bother her at all, actually. She had a purpose in life, to keep an eye on the Tomorrow People, to chronicle their lives as she had done for the Immortals she had watched.
Stalked, really, if you asked Alberta. Alberta was sometimes still uncomfortable with a former Watcher for a student, even after Greer had finally chopped up her wrist over the sink and made her tattoo go away. The sink had been full of blood that way as she let the blood wash away what she had been at one point in her life. Former Watcher turned Immortal. Besides Adam Pierson, who had been Immortal all along, she had to be the only one. The Watchers would surely be more careful, check out their new hires, watch out for another one like her.
She was sure that Michael was her Watcher. Michael, who loved her more than life itself. Michael was hardly neutral, she could have told him that had she not been bound by honor not to tell him that she knew. She didn't want him to lose his job; like her, he would be a Watcher until he died. And she did not want to cause him to lose that thing that he loved, lose the time with the Chronicles and the Watching and everything else.
It was something that she missed. Sure, she had the Tomorrow People, she'd keep an eye on them and catalog their beginnings and Michael would take care of it after she was gone. She was sure that he'd outlive her, even mortal as he was. She was not a fighter, and she knew it, and all the techniques in the world wouldn't make up for her lack of experience. Besides, even if a window had opened when the door closed, others could do her job for her. Others could keep an eye on the fascinating evolution of humanity.
Greer didn't really make long-term plans other than that, other than making sure everything would be taken care of when she died. Because she wasn't going to live long, she probably wouldn't prosper, and she did have to keep things in mind for the future. So she was careful to do that and nothing else. More would give her hope. More would give her dreams.
And she knew she wouldn't live long enough to dream.
