"Ow!" Wataru pried the Sagat off of his ear, which it seemed to want to chew off. Or maybe it was trying to transform him. He wasn't sure.
All he knew was that he was all over Sagat bites as the child of his two henshin devices tried to figure out how to partner with him. Which was impossible of course; the Sagat couldn't transform him into either Saga or Kiva, no matter how hard it tried; it simply lacked the ability.
His brother Taiga reassured him that the Sagat would grow out of trying to transform him eventually. It might take a couple of years, but it would figure things out. And stop trying to bite him as he was trying to sleep.
The Sagat made a trilling noise and went to settle on his head and try to eat his hair, instead. "Thirty more years?" he wondered out loud.
Kivat the Third, the Sagat's father, swooped down, as did Sagarc, its mother. The two rarely saw eye to eye, and where one was, the other felt that it needed to go.
The Sagarc made a comment at him. While Taiga was tutoring him in the language, he still didn't catch most of what it was saying. He looked to Kivat automatically, still more used to the bat than the flatter Sagarc.
"That's what she says," Kivat said tiredly. The Sagarc bounced up and down as if in agreement. "It could be worse. You're still young."
Wataru nodded. "Dr. Takada says that I'll live for a few centuries yet." Which was probably due to his big brother's stunt at the dam, but he couldn't be upset with Taiga any more about it. Plus, Dr. Takada was determined to make sure he lived out his entire lifespan. And he suspected that Dr. Takada was also under instructions to make sure he aged slowly, orders of the King.
"See?" Kivat asked. "You'll live to see it to adulthood."
Reaching up, Wataru pulled the Sagat out of his hair. It nibbled at his fingers and tried to bite him where it had seen its father bite him. Wataru endured the pinches because the Sagat was like him, trying to figure out its way in a world where it never did quite fit in.
If its parents would cooperate, that would be even better, but he had a lot to work on with them, too.
"I know I will," Wataru said. He would be a father sometime in the near future, find someone, father Masao. Masao would have a Kivat partner but Wataru wouldn't be surprised if he'd grown up with the Sagat first.
He stroked the Sagat like Taiga had shown him, and the Sagat gave a happy trill in response. He smiled. Even if he was all over Sagat's bites, he would survive. Because he, like it, was still figuring out what he was, and he suspected he would take a while to grow completely into his powers too.
Cradling it in his hands, he curled up and went back to sleep.
