"Surely if you didn't act that way, Nogami Ryotaro would...." Deneb started. They'd been through this argument a million times, Yuuto never listening to a word he said.
"Shut up."
Deneb bowed, mentally sighing. Yuuto was a singularity point, and he wasn't going anywhere any time soon. Not that he wanted to; Yuuto was also a person he valued, and a person that he was going to shape into the man that he knew. The man who he had chosen, the man Yuuto would someday become.
That didn't mean it wasn't difficult sometimes, that he didn't regret it sometimes.
The time traveler that Sakurai Yuuto would become had wished for him to accompany him, be his protector and his servant and one that nudged him when he needed nudging. And when he'd been needed in the past, needed to keep an eye on the Sakurai-to-be, he'd gladly gone. He'd formed his friendship with that man, and he'd do anything for him.
Even making the past Sakurai into the man he would become.
This boy had his host's heart, even if it didn't always show. But the burden of what he was to become, the future that Deneb had given him (though Deneb tried not to give the bits that hurt), he was understandably solemn and focused, not unlike the man that Deneb had known. The only consolation was that the younger Sakurai knew how to laugh.
Deneb had tried to make sure the boy knew how to laugh, even after losing his parents. Deneb had taken him in, tried to raise him, tried to keep him from going crazy. Gave him the stars in forty eras, watched over the boy as he scanned the heavens for the constellations that he loved.
The boy was reflected in the man. The man who had named him after a constellation, a legend. A man who had laughed and loved and tried to fit into a new time. Who had left a fiance and a potential brother in law behind because he knew their fate.
Deneb knew their fate, too. He was the man's partner, after all. There were certain things that Deneb kept in his memory, things that Sakurai Yuuto remembered from when Deneb was his partner before. He and Yuuto were fated doing things that the elder one remembered, and Deneb was the one that had to make sure they were done.
He had a certain fondness for Nogami Ryotaro, pressed Yuuto to like him as the future Yuuto had liked him. Nogami was a big part of Yuuto's life, one that the younger him didn't appreciate yet. Deneb had no choice but to prod, to poke, to make Yuuto think of Nogami Ryotaro until he realized what he was missing out on.
That seemed impossible most of the time, though sometimes he saw hints of Yuuto softening towards his future brother in law. Hints that his prodding were working, or maybe that Yuuto's innate goodness was showing through.
Sometimes he saw his own partner, his own Yuuto, standing in the past doing what needed to be done. He wished his partner would share the reason for being offstage one day, hoped he would, knew he would. When Yuuto went into the past, Deneb felt both of them, the feelings and sometimes the thoughts.
Deneb hungered for those times. Deneb missed his partner, but he had a charge to take care of. A promise to keep. A partner, a host, to foster.
"Deneb, come!"
Deneb sighed, following Yuuto out of Zeroliner and into their latest adventure.
