Monster Genes

c 2008

Aya and her mother rarely saw each other anymore. Aya lived near the ocean, and her mother didn't want any part of that. So, when she saw her mom, it was usually her going there than the other way around. Fortunately, she taught swimming; her schedule was fairly flexible.

But sometimes her mother came to her, instead, when she felt that she could stand being so close. She made an effort, and Aya applauded her for it, both of them knowing the reason for her mother's trauma. "I hear you lecture about the monsters," her mother said wearily, sitting on the western-style chair and sipping at her not-so-hot tea.

"Someone has to. I want to save people - other women - from what you went through." Her father was far away, and hopefully would stay that way. "I didn't tell you because I didn't want to remind you of my father."

"As long as you are fighting against the monsters, I can live with that," her mother said. What was left unspoken was that she didn't want Aya to become a monster either, it was bad enough that her daughter couldn't resist being in the ocean every other day. She picked up a picture that Kuramae-san had had taken of the two of them. "Aya, who's this?"

Aya flinched. She'd made that pledge to her mother about a husband and children, and the photo made it seem like she wasn't going to keep it. "That's me and Kuramae-san. We met at one of my lectures. He's interested in the monsters too. We're friends."

"Are you sure?" her mother asked.

"We're *friends*," Aya said firmly. "Even if he wanted more, I'm not marrying, and I'm certainly not having kids." Neither of them knew if her kids would inherit the nonhuman traits that she'd gotten from her father - and she wasn't going to risk it.

She needed space from Kuramae-san for a bit, anyway. In their latest discussion, he'd idly mused about the fact that the monsters of legend were able to have kids with humans, and wondered if either of them had monster genes. He hadn't put it quite the way she was, but that had been the gist. Aya had shivered, mostly because she *did* have monster genes. Kuramae-san hadn't even noticed.

"Good," her mother said. "You know I've never wanted grandchildren."

"I've never wanted children," Aya said. She never had the urge to reproduce anyway, and her mother had basically always bought her boys' stuff - for a while, Aya had been convinced that she'd wanted a boy, but her mother just hadn't wanted her to be *feminine*, to think she had to get married and have kids.

Her mother hadn't been keen on the water stuff, but at least she could live with it. Knowing that the father of her child was a real, genuine monster had been less of a shock because of Aya's own obsession with the water - at least it finally explained things, she'd told her daughter once.

"And Kuramae-san?" her mother asked.

"Don't know," Aya admitted. If Kuramae-san wanted more, he'd just have to find someone who did want children of their own. "There's no future for us, so he's safe."

Her mother sighed. "I thought I wanted kids... until I met your father."

Aya nodded. "And you got me. I'll make sure you have no grandkids."

Her mother sighed again. "Is he a good friend?"

"We share an interest in the monsters," Aya said. "And we like each other. And sometimes we talk about other things."

"Just be careful, Aya," her mother said. "You never know what he might truly be. Look at your father."

"I'll be careful, Mom," she promised. Because she would be. She had no plans to repeat what had happened to her mother, she didn't want to cause her mother that much pain.

Her mother finished her tea in silence. "I hope so," she said.

Aya could only silently agree.
