If there was anybody that Aya really, genuinely got along with, it was Aso Megumi. Of course, the other woman had come from her dimension, so that made things easier.
One day, she compared notes with Megumi about the two different versions of Kuramae Noboru. "So, he kidnapped you for this other Fangaire, and then the other Fangaire chased him off, and then he chased the other Fangaire off?" she asked.
"I was unconscious for some of it, but yes," Megumi said. "I have a hard time believing that this one's better."
Aya winced. "He did kidnap me," she admitted. "Not because he was in love with me, though, it's because of course he couldn't leave me there when I had such useful DNA. Of course, mine had help; somebody certainly boxed up my apartment. I was really angry at him at first, and then I couldn't do much about it, so...."
"Maybe he's not as good as you think," Megumi suggested.
Aya stole a glance at Megumi's father Jiro, who was sitting nearby. "Our Kuramae Noborus seem to have kidnapping in common," she said. "I think, though, that mine genuinely thought he was doing some good."
Which was true; he could go on for quite a number of minutes on how safe she was now, how recognized she was for what she was.
"We'll get out of here, Aya," Megumi said. "One way or another. I don't like this place. I don't like being told I'm oh-so-precious because I'm half Wolfen."
"They do think that restarting our respecting 'species' is more important than our freedom," Aya said, "Though how they're going to restart any of the three is a good question, given that there's a grand total of three purebreds. Four, if they can get your body to overwrite your human DNA." Damn, she was starting to sound like Kuramae-san. "They give me internet in my room; I've been reading up on the world outside."
"I don't have Internet in my room," Megumi said enviously.
"Maybe they'll let you come over to my room sometime," Aya said, thinking fast. If they let Megumi come over and Aya could convince them to turn off at least audio monitoring, then they could plan an escape route out of there. Maybe if the two of them hit Kuramae-san hard enough, they could knock him out and then get out of there. She was certainly not staying in the facility. "I've got a lot of stuff; the staff seems to like me."
Jiro, nearby, snorted. He probably thought she was soft, or a turncoat. Given that she'd been given the things and the space in return for information on her father, which ended up with the capture of the three monsters and Megumi, he wouldn't be entirely inaccurate. Suddenly, she wished she hadn't told Kuramae-san where they were; but that was before she had realized that Jiro-san had a child, and Jiro-san and her father hung out together, and that Kuramae-san considered her a Merman and not a human. But it was still no excuse.
She had to get Megumi out of there; she owed the other woman that much, and saving her from being changed as Aya had been forced to change would be worth it. She knew that she probably couldn't go home now, but Megumi probably could. "I wish I could have coffee again," Megumi said wistfully.
"Against doctor's orders?" Aya asked. She made a note to treat Megumi to a pot of coffee when they got out of there.
The other woman nodded. "I like my coffee," she said. "So does Dad, and since I can't drink it, he can't drink it."
"It's swill anyway," her father said contemptuously. "We can get a better cup elsewhere."
"Since when does institutional coffee taste good?" Aya said, agreeing with Megumi's father. "I envy a Wolfen's taste buds - your father probably has the best instinct for coffee in the world."
"I do," Jiro-san said, without any false modesty. If he hadn't been too dangerous to let out into the world, then she would have had no problem using him to find good coffee.
"It's not like the world wouldn't accept us as nonhumans," Aya said. "In fact, it may be too accepting of us as nonhumans. A paradise, for some." She looked over at Jiro-san, with her father and Riki-san sitting beyond. Her father would love the world beyond, she knew. All the better not to let him live there.
But someday, she and Megumi would be free. And, if Aya could help it, Megumi would be away from this world. She could go back; Aya knew she could not, she was too changed.
At least one of them would be free.
