Title: Bridge to Nowhere
Author: Estirose
Fandom: Kamen Rider Kiva
Spoilers: episode 23 onward
Rating: 8+
Notes: Probably kind of AU from the current universe.
Summary: Bishop follows orders, and watches a potential candidate.

"If I must give up being Queen, then be it," Maya had said. She was still a Fangire, but she had broken the rules. Unfortunately, the King had ruled that she live, pardoned her. So Bishop had to let her live. He wasn't sure that leaving her alive was a good idea, now that she was pregnant with her human lover's child, but he had no choice.

And for the King, he watched over her and her child, just as he watched over the King's son.

Her son was born, and she named him Wataru. Bishop had to laugh as he realized the meaning of the name. Wataru was a bridge to nowhere, an aberration, but the King wanted him alive because he was still Maya's child. A heir to the Checkmate Four. Things would have been so much easier if the two would die, but the King wouldn't have heard of it, and he was still bound by the King's wishes, even if he was dead.

Royal blood was never to be executed until it proved that it was worthless. The old King did not consider Wataru to be worthless.

He kept tabs on Wataru, watched him grow up. Aberration Wataru might have been, but Bishop secretly approved of the way Maya raised the boy. If he had to live, at least he seemed to live up to his Fangire heritage, even if Maya hedged her bets about him showing the power of his Fangire side. He hoped that Wataru would blossom at puberty into full Fangire, become something other than the aberration he was. Some half-breeds did that, after all, some of the rare ones that came into being.

And then Maya died, but Bishop kept watching her child. Wataru remained blissfully human, aging and probably dying as a human would. He had the child of Maya's Kivat with him to keep him company, but he seemed destined to grow old alone, not passing his bloodline to human or Fangire. Bishop could live with that. If he would not blossom as a Fangire, he was welcome to die as a human.

One day, he saw Wataru run by, calling for Kivat, going into the harnessed Kiva armor. He smiled grimly. Wataru was of the royal bloodline, after all. He was worthier than the last person to assume Kiva. Bishop followed him, watched him fight a Fangire. Maya's son had become a warrior. A misguided warrior, but still a warrior.

And then he saw Tatsulot come, and Wataru changed. Bishop took an involuntary breath as Kiva's true form emerged. Wataru seemed comfortable with it, as if he was born to it.

Which he had been, of course. And he had the power to use the King's armor, fitting of his bloodline.

The new Queen's emergence meant the new King was imminent. And it looked like the new King was emerging as well. Wataru seemed as unaware of his true self as Mio had, and Bishop would have to guide the boy. Force the full King within him to emerge, which meant that the boy's body would purge his human blood at last.

Bishop actually looked forward to it. He would just keep a close eye on the boy. Force him to assume the Kiva armor more and more until the King within him emerged. When Wataru became sick from the change into King, he'd make his move, take care of Wataru, and take him under his wing.

He had a new Queen and a new King to guide into their roles, making the Checkmate Four complete once more. Certainly Bishop could have done without Maya's half-breed child becoming King, but he could live with it.

After all, the survival of the Fangire was all that mattered to Bishop, and he did his job well.
