I wrote three fics for Yuletide this year, and so I thought I'd write about them, and link them.

Well, first, I have to admit, they were on my little list of "fics in my requested fandoms". Generally speaking, it's poor form to rec your own fics, and so I merely listed them. The reasoning behind this is that the fandoms that I was listing in are/were so comparatively *small*, especially in amounts of fic written in them for Yuletide, that it would have been bad form to rec my own fics, and yet I didn't want people to figure out which ones I wrote before reveal because I omitted them in recs. (That post should now only list stories I *didn't* write.)

Step in the Right Direction (Starman): This was written for jadelennox, who I've written for before in the same fandom (fic: Staras Trankvilla). Last year's was an exploration of Jenny as a Treat; this year, I had her as my recipient, and she requested Wylie and Scott, and so she got... Wylie and Scott. I did scribble down some notes at work about the story I had planned, and then I *lost* them, and the only thing I could remember was that Scott was in Washington for some reason, and they were playing chess. So, that's what ended up in the finished fic.

I think, in my background, Scott was seeking some closure too. His wife and kids were visiting... somewhere, so he went to go see an old... well, enemy. But that didn't come out in the fic because I didn't remember it until several days *after* I'd uploaded!

The chess metaphor, I thought, was fitting. Scott and Wylie taking turns to talk, thinking about their moves, as Fox and Paul had moved so many years before. Scott is bitter and frustrated in this fic; Ben is reflecting on what he did, but he's more calm because in some ways, he got more closure than Scott before the fic.

I didn't really know where to start with this fic, other than the chess game, until I used a bit of my own background for Wylie's. I am a second-generation civil servant, and a lot of us out here are here because we want to help people (, dangit!). To Ben, he's had many jobs over twenty years, and this has removed a lot of the sting, but... you always remember the people that you meant to help, but botched it. Which is what Wylie feels about Scott, in this fic.

So, it came out well, despite a lot of terror on my part. [livejournal.com profile] tptigger could probably tell you that I got the beta back (right after my final) and was freaking out on whether I wrote it long enough. But I think I did.

The title comes from the last line in the story, because it is a step, and only a step, in that direction.

In The Stars, A Beauty (Kamen Rider Den-O): This was written for Daluci. I woke up the 24th, found that Yuletide Madness was open, quickly looked for fandoms I could write in, and then wrote this one - before I went into work. Thankfully, the prompt was kind of specific, and easily writable, so I dashed out this quick one about a pre-series Sakurai Yuuto coming in to the Milk Dipper and musing about its future.

I'm just glad that it was "write any of these characters you can" in the note, because I wasn't sure how I was going to squish both the Yuutos in. As it happened, it's easier for me to see Older!Yuuto (Sakurai) in there, so the rest of it just fell into place. He comes in; he sees the men in the cafe, including Oozaki and Miura, and Airi, and Ryoutarou, and he muses about the future of the Milk Dipper. I have trouble writing Oozaki and Miura, so it's just as well that they just get a mention, with the focus on Sakurai's thoughts, not dialogue. It came out quick, at least, and I uploaded it before I went to work.

The title comes from Sakurai's musings about Airi.

Drifts Dreaming (Earth: Final Conflict): Written for Jewels, who requested a fic about Liam's heritage that wasn't his powers. This was one of the prompts I found when I was looking for them the morning of the 24th. I emailed it to myself at work, and promptly (no pun intended) wrote it at lunch. This was a fun prompt, because I was sitting there trying to think of things that Liam could be dreaming of.

The first thing that Liam dreams of is an intelligent herbivore that I just made up randomly, the next is a reference to Sakurai and Airi of Kamen Rider Den-O. The third, the blob in the swamp, is a combination of two player character species from Fantasy Flight Games' Dragonstar (a D20 campaign setting). The fourth is a reference to Sam and Martouf of Stargate SG-1 (the recipient had run, or been active, in the Sam-and-Martouf list years before). The fifth was probably inspired by Fred of the Diane Duane "Wizards" books.

But this is kind of a sad fic as well, because it's things that Liam dreams, not things that he remembers, so all of this he's missing out on, really. (And I nearly missed out on posting it in time due to database wonkiness and only posted it 13 minutes before deadline, but that's another story....)

The title comes from the first paragraph of the story, because Liam really does drift in his memories as he's dreaming.
