Summary: Taiga is the protector, Wataru the protected.
Note: Taiga and Wataru are both older than they were in previous stories in this series. And yet they're not the young adults they are in canon.

"Big Brothers," Taiga said firmly, "Are supposed to protect little ones."
"But I was okay," Wataru protested. Sometimes being Taiga's little brother was frustrating - doubly so because he was also Taiga's first subject... and Taiga was determined to be a responsible King. Especially to his little brother.
He had to admit that it was good to have his shoe back. The other boys knew that he was different somehow, that he didn't go to school like they did. The weirdo who was home schooled and liked to take things home to share with his parents. Especially his mother.
"No you weren't," Taiga said, folding his arms. Wataru could see his black glove clenching an elbow, a sure sign that Taiga was irritated... at the bullies, not at Wataru, but Wataru was sure that Taiga was a little irritated that Wataru wouldn't let Taiga protect him like he should.
To Taiga, Wataru was his helpless little brother, the royal prince who would never inherit the throne because of his human blood. Someone to be protected, to leave secluded, because he was more precious than life itself. And Wataru wasn't sure he wanted to be Taiga's little brother, to be that protected sibling, that useless prince.
Taiga wanted Wataru to stay at home, to practice violin, to study and advise. Taiga was the protector, Wataru the protected. Nothing could be done about either, as far as Taiga was concerned. But Wataru felt the urge to rebel, to be more than his brother wanted him to be, to embrace the world like his human father did and to see it with the eyes of both species.
But Taiga was unyielding and Wataru didn't want to fight him, so he didn't argue back. Taiga placed an arm around his shoulders. "Let's go home," he said.
Wataru nodded, following.
