“Otoya,” Maya said as the two of them sat together, Taiga asleep nearby, “I got the results from the doctor.”

“What did he say?” Otoya asked, leaning forward dramatically, as if to drape himself over her.

She smiled. It was funny how they loved each other, the powerless Queen and the human musician. “He says that we have conceived,” Maya told him. Dr. Takada was a professional; and despite her fallen status, he still remained loyal to her. Dr. Takimoto, the obstetrician, would be the
same.

“Wataru,” Otoya said, his eyes brightening. “But isn’t it too soon?”

“No,” Maya said gently. “Wataru is... right on time. He won’t be born until 1988.” She let Otoya figure the math, waited for it to shock him that he’d have to wait so long for Wataru to come into the world.

“That would be,” Otoya paused to calculate, “Over a year.” He stared at her. “That’s normal?”

“Of course,” Maya said, pleased. “That’s how long Fangire pregnancies last.” Wataru had been half and half, but she’d been pleased none the less when her doctors had told her that he was developing at a Fangire rate. Some part of her wanted him to be Fangire, and it seemed he would be, at least in the womb. Dr. Takimoto had told her to double her food intake, just like she had with Taiga; the child was royal, after all, and needed to be fed properly to develop. It was clear that Dr. Takimoto had wanted the child to be Fangire, and it pleased Maya to make it so.

The Wataru that she’d met seemed to be living without Life Energy, but at least while he was in her, he would be fed like any Fangire would. His energy level was a little low for her senses and she didn’t know how long it would be before he would need to feed... but he probably would eventually.

Otoya hugged her. “That’s great!”

“I’ll have to feed him as if he was any Fangire child,” she told him gently. “He is a Fangire, after all.”

“I know you’ll only do what you have to do,” Otoya said. “I’ll just have to play to him every night.”

Maya smiled. “Day and night,” she said. “To celebrate both sides of him.”

“Of course,” Otoya said, hamming it up like she’d expected him to. “He is our child, after all.”

"Yes, he is." Maya was looking forward to that part of her pregnancy, for sure. And Wataru would probably be easier on her than Taiga had been. Not that Dr. Takimoto had too much experience with hybrids.

Otoya was giving her a silly smile, silly even for him. Maya could forgive him; their child could change things for humans and Fangire alike.

"I wonder... will he still be the same person, though?" Maya wondered. Did things as they were going produce Wataru, or had something else happen? Wataru seemed sad, so willing to give up his existence.

"Of course he will," Otoya said. "He's ours, after all. You and I will raise him."

Assuming Otoya didn't have any side effects, of course, from being Dark Kiva, that he lived long enough to raise her sons.

"Yes, we'll raise him together," she decided. "But if he isn't the person we remember, in the end?"

"It doesn't matter," Otoya told her. "Because he's yours. And he's mine."

"And he'll be both of our worlds," Maya said. Hunting for food like a Fangire; love of the arts like his human father. Best of both worlds.

A prince yet to be born. A possible heir to the Checkmate Four.

Bishop would have had a hissyfit if he'd lived. But thankfully, she'd gotten rid of him, she and Otoya had. So no worried there.

Thinks looked good for their children, and Maya was thankful. But she couldn't help but wonder if Wataru would be the same person, or if he would change because of what might have happened.

Placing her hand on her stomach, she let Otoya bliss out while she considered the possibilities.
