Masao sipped at his coffee as he worked on his notepad's display settings. It was very wet outside, and he really didn't want to be out there. Sure, he was fairly carefree as things went, but even he didn't like wet, blowing rain.
"So, you have any plans for the weekend?" his friend, Michiko asked as she plopped herself down beside him.
"School, doctor, the usual sorts of things," Masao said airily. "Lunch with my uncle."
They were the usual sorts of things. Masao didn't remember a time when he wasn't going to the doctor to have his lifespan fixed; Uncle Taiga was obsessed, especially since he and Masao's father both had the expanded lifespans of the Fangire, even though his father was only half.
"Can you make time for a meeting?" Michiko asked. "A couple of friends are getting together and talking about something *very important*." She looked at him pleadingly. "Something that might save the people of the planet."
"I'm all into the environmental stuff," Masao said. "This have to do with that?" If it was, he'd probably allow himself to be roped in.
"Actually, you've heard of the Fangire, right?" Machiko asked, leaning forward and lowering her voice. This meant Very Bad Things usually.
"Uh huh," Masao asked, confused. "What about them?"
"Well, they hunt humans. Shouldn't they be eliminated?" Michiko asked, and Masao was frightened by the sincerity of her tone.
"Not anymore, they don't," Masao pointed out. "They haven't done that for years, and they hunt down those who do."
Uncle Taiga was good at that. Uncle Taiga had done away with the hunting, the killing. Sure, it had taken effort to fight the Neo-Fangire, but he and Masao's father and Masao himself had managed it too.
"That's just a front," Michiko insisted. "They're really trying to lull us into beliving that they're harmless when we're really their sheep! To be slaughtered at will!"
Masao winced at that. "Are you sure about that?" he asked.
"Very sure," Michiko said. "Don't believe the lies, Masao."
Masao wished he could tell her that his Uncle was a King, his Papa had once held the throne, and his Grandmother had been Queen. Uncle Taiga was sincere about his reformations; if not, Papa would have killed him long before. Uncle Taiga was a good man.
"There have been hunter groups before," Masao said. "The most successful of them won by negotiation, not death." The Wondrous Blue Sky Association, where his honorary Uncle Nago and Aunt Megumi had met. Masao's Uncle Taiga and his Papa had often told him of what had happened, that there would not have been peace if Shima Mamoru hadn't convinced Uncle Taiga that Papa was sincere and should be listened to.
"The Fangire decieved them," Michiko insisted. "Look, I know you're Kiva. I know that you've defended the world against the Neo-Fangire. Now it's time to go after their progenitors."
Masao would have laughed if he'd thought it wise. Kiva was a Fangire armor; he couldn't wear it had he not had Fangire blood. "The progenitors were lab scientists not following protocols. Don't lump the rest of the Fangire in with them." He was more familiar with the history of the Neo-Fangire than most people were, being Uncle Taiga's nephew. "I really don't think that the Fangire are causing harm."
"Then come to our meeting, and we'll show you," Michiko said, getting up. "Ehime Building, room 16, Five O'Clock. Be there."
Masao nodded. He doubted he could change their minds, as they couldn't change his; but it would be good to know what they were doing. While he hated to be a tattletale, Uncle Taiga deserved to know. Uncle Taiga deserved to keep his people safe.
And Masao would keep his people safe too.
