This is not a fanfic. Last year, for NaNoWriMo, I started on two novels. I finished one. This is a scene featuring two of the characters from that novel, which I hope to publish (likely through Lulu) someday. The novel is called "Late Bloomer".

In the end, Emery thought, it really didn't matter.
She curled up against Guy; someday they'd get married, once she was old enough. Old enough, of course, being a few decades in the future. The Enshanti were adamant about that, she was too young to get married, too young for Guy, too young for everything. Even if she'd been Tested and confirmed, she was still too young to be anything but a teenager.
Of course, living for thirty-something years as a human made it hard to get her mind around anything resembling Enshanti ideals. She was deeply aware that her kin thought her a lost child, to be reraised as Enshanti, to somewhat get rid of her human mindset. But they had other things in mind too.
Like getting Hayfork back from the edge of dying. Making sure that KentPet Harps kept in business.
The Enshanti were making calls. They were trying to change things. Sure, change wouldn't come overnight - the bureaucrats in Sacramento and Washington made sure of that - but she knew things would change.
Guy ran a hand through her hair gently. She knew that it was hard for him, too, to wait for her to be an adult, a full adult. But that's what he got for falling in love with her. She had to be what she was, and he knew it. Her grandmother approved of Guy, in fact her whole family did. Someday, he would move to Hayfork permanently and run the financial side of KentPet Harps while she made the harps.
Someday, she'd get her Dad back, too. The Healers had taken him away, to make sure he was healthy before he stood trial. Her grandmother had promised he would not die - even if the alternative was repulsive to him. She'd get across that she needed him - KentPet needed him - and then they'd bring him back.
In the meantime, at least she had her family. She had her friends. She had her home town. Hayfork was her home, not Boston, and finally her family had understood that. Boston would never be her home, even if she'd been born there.
She was a California girl, and she wouldn't never not be from California, and her family even respected that, made amused noises, and let her and Guy be. As soon as Hayfork was cleaned up and revived, things would be better. She would stop being a project to them, much like her town would eventually not be a project to them.
But in the meantime, she was content to lay in Guy's arms, rest, watch the movie. Because she had her home. And she had her friends.
And everything was all right.
