Rook is one of my alternate Kurenai Watarus. His AU is simple: what if Wataru somehow ended up as Rook? This particular fic features said Wataru and one of his fellow Checkmate Fours.

"Thanks for helping me today, Wataru," Nao said gratefully. As Bishop, she had tons of books... and she didn't like moving them.
Their Rook smiled. "It's okay," he said. "I'm glad you took my advice."
"Taiga does sound like he is in constant need of comfort," she said. "But I enjoy my privacy. I don't think I can live under the strictures that you do."
"I wish Taiga would let me sleep in my bed more often," Wataru admitted. "I can get away with it sometimes... but if he feels like it, I can wake up the next morning in his. I warned him of the danger of me sleeping with Mio, but...."
"Our King is very forgiving," Nao said. "But it does feel like he needs us around him. A surrogate family."
"I know," Wataru said. "He was my best friend when we were kids, and Rook's role *is* protecting the King and Queen, so I have no reason to be away from him."
"That's right," Nao said. "You need to be near him. I just need to keep records. Therefore, it makes no sense. Plus, our King doesn't appreciate the risk of losing Bishop, records, and King in one fell swoop...."
"Taiga understands," Wataru said, "And in some ways he doesn't understand."
"I know," she said. "He needs us so much...." That had to be an understatement.
"Yes," Wataru replied. "I wish he didn't, but...."
She nodded. "There could be worse fates."
"Yes," he acknowledged. There were worse fates, and they both knew it.
But sometimes it didn't make living with him any easier. Even as little as Nao did.
And someday, too, she might lose her freedom.
