Mirrored Reflections
by Estirose
c 2006

Kagami wasn't really a mirror. Really. Despite his name, he didn't reflect anyone.

But he thought about it.

Arrogant Tendou didn't need a mirror. Kagami wasn't sure at this point why he still stood the other Rider, but he did. Maybe it was because of Juka; maybe because ZECT was still gunning for the other Rider and he wanted to protect him.

Maybe it was because despite Tendou's stubbornness, Kagami had a faint hope that he'd change the man. Make him listen. Even though he knew it was hopeless, he still hung around. Almost like a sidekick, though since getting Gatack he shouldn't feel that way. But sometimes he still did. Felt like Tendou's clumsy sidekick.

He sincerely hoped he didn't reflect Kageyama-san. The commander of Shadow, TheBee's host, almost as arrogant as Tendou and not enough strength to back it up. Wherever TheBee's host went, trouble was sure to follow, and Kagami was glad enough to be free of that.

Of course, he and Kageyama-san had shared the same Zecter at different points. And maybe Kageyama-san reflected him. Been what he could have been. Hapless sycophant of Yaguruma-san, loyal to himself and those who gave him power. He had been loyal to Yaguruma-san in ways Kagami hadn't been, and when TheBee's host had shifted, he'd lost that strength.

But at least he'd let go. Kagami couldn't even say that about himself and Tendou.

Yaguruma-san he'd never reflected, but he'd tried. He admired the man even though he hated his tendency to put his goals over his ethics. Maybe Kageyama-san was a mirror of Yaguruma-san, maybe the other man was a distorted version of Yaguruma-san. Yaguruma-san had, Kagami thought, expected Tendou to save him. Kageyama-san had not planned the same way. If Kageyama had his way, Kagami would have been dead.

But at least Yaguruma-san was loyal to ZECT. He was a ZECT loyalist the way that Kagami could not be.

Thinking of Yaguruma-san made him think of Tadokoro-san. He couldn't reflect Tadokoro-san at all, unless one was trying for a young and eager version. Why Tadokoro-san didn't transfer him, why he wasn't in Shadow or some other unit, he didn't know. He'd be proud to be a reflection of Tadokoro-san, who was willing to sacrifice himself to save his subordinates.

He knew that he'd never be. Nor of Misaki-san, either.

Misaki-san always knew the right things to say and to do. She was smart, fast, and dangerous. From robbing stores to figuring things out on the computer, she was the one that he admired. The one he could never be.

He was an ugly duckling compared to Misaki-san, and he knew it. Even if he liked her, he'd never be worthy of her.

Daisuke. The odd one, well, not odder than Kamishiro Tsurugi, but odd enough in his own way. It was sad what they had in common; not that Kagami was a make up artist or anything other than that, but there was a hidden depth to Kazama Daisuke that few people saw. He'd taken in Gon because he could, not because he wanted to exploit her. What he'd given up for Gon, what he'd lost when he lost Gon... the man was hurting.

The man, in a lot of ways, was himself.

Thinking of Daisuke made him think of Tsurugi. He had to keep reminding himself that it wasn't a dream, that Sasword's host had called Kagami his best friend. And there were few things odder than being a friend with a Worm that couldn't quite face the reality that he was a Worm. Kagami had to wonder if he wasn't a more sensible, middle-class version of Tsurugi, a Tsurugi that had not been killed by a Worm, a Tsurugi that was the son of a police chief, not a son of privilege.

He had more things in common with Tsurugi and Daisuke than he wanted to admit. However, he wasn't either of them, for which he was glad.

Thinking of Tsurugi made him think of his father. His father always seemed to have some purpose for him. Oh, he had a suspicion that his father had loved Ryo, but it was himself, Arata, that had bee the center of his father's attention. Kagami wasn't sure what his father wanted for him. It wasn't to go into the police force, that was for sure. But what his father wanted him to do remained a mystery.

No, he was not a reflection of his father. For which he was very glad.

He thought briefly of Hiyori. Hiyori, his co-worker at the Bistro La Salle, who apparently drew fairies. He didn't know if he reflected her or not; she kept herself to herself. Hiyori was a puzzle, one that he might never develop the answer to.

But one thing was for sure: he wasn't a reflection of anybody. Not Tendou, not Kageyama-san, not Yaguruma-san, not Tadokoro-san or Misaki-san, not Daisuke or Tsurugi, or Hiyori, and certainly not his father.

He was not a reflection, and he was glad of it.

I'm in the process of trying to run out the door, so I don't have time for an extended comment, but I will say that this was quite marvelous.

I can't believe I never commented on this; I am a bad friend sometimes, seriously.

Firstly, THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS.

Secondly, I thought this was a really interesting look at Kagami's characterization and his thoughts. You also snuck the rest of the characters in there, which was awesome. It's a really good survey of the series. I enjoyed it ^^

Thanks. :)

Yeah, I liked this one. Of course, for some reason, Kagami's the easiest for me to write in Kabuto....
