Kanji and fandom secrets

I'm a bit rather deep into a fic right now, but I was discussing some stuff with
angel_negra, so I thought I'd post about it here, too.
First of all, for Kamen Rider Kiva, Wataru's kanji means to cross over or go across, which is fitting if you've been spoiled as to his origin. Otoya's name consists of the kanji for sound and one that's apparently an obscure "to be". (I thought it was "world", but apparently it's drawn differently and means something completely different....)
I have to admit, I never went much into the meaning of the characters' kanji last year. I was too busy, apparently, learning the kanji for "sakura" and "Nakamura". KR Blade's characters all had names having to do with the first or beginning of something (Mutsuki, for example, means first moon, and Hajime of course means begin; I can't remember Kenzaki's or Tachibana's at the moment.) The main Oni in Hibiki all had, I believe, sound-related names.
I'm on Fandom Secrets. I've actually posted three secrets to that comm, two of which ended up in the same post next to each other. (But that's a post for another time.)
Well, yesterday, in Secrets #400, there was a Secret that was a rant about the new Toku fans and the fact that they'd brought yaoi into the Toku fandom, and talked about only the pretty boys (and apparently these people came from D-Boys/TeniMyu/Hana Kimi and such).
Which made me go "bwah?" because while I'm not an old-school Toku fan, I came into the fandom in 2004, and the lady who got me into it was merrily slashing Tachibana and Mutsuki in Kamen Rider Blade, and Mihara and Kusaka in Faiz. While, like a lot of new gen, Blade had a few pretty boys (the only recent KR without pretty boys was Hibiki, and it had its own issues - eta: whoops, I forgot about Nakamura Yuuichi!), it wasn't into the youngsters (okay, Mutsuki, but he was the least major of the Riders) as much as the newer (Kabuto, Den-O, Kiva) KR shows.
I've picked up most of my Toku FL since I was introduced to
finalauraburst during Kabuto's run, which means that I wasn't exposed to it during Hibiki. If I put slash-colored glasses on, I could really put Zanki and Todoroki together (Matsuda Kenji? Hot hot hot!) And I don't remember getting D-Boys fans wandering about the places I frequented during Hibiki (which Nakamura Yuuichi was in).
But slash is not a new phenomenon in Toku fandom, and it certainly did not come into existence after we started getting popular with certain fan groups.
As for the talking about pretty boys? I was certainly doing that in 2004 with KR Blade and Faiz and Dekaranger. I freely admit I'm into pretty boys, even though I recognize that most of them are a tad young for me. I'm in the same age group as Matsuda Kenji/Zanki. I don't watch the shows for the fighting action, I watch it for the storyline and the cute guys. And I'm not ashamed to admit it.
