I think my brain has had too much sugar. Or at least too-sweet plot bunnies.

"Taiga," Otoya could hear his wife lecturing, "Stop running down the halls." Her tone was stern, but if Otoya listened closely, he could hear the laughter in her voice as she admonished her older son.

"But mom!" the boy announced as Otoya put down the Bloody Rose, "I wasn't running!" Otoya could imagine Taiga looking all innocent, which was not too surprising, because he'd had a lot of practice.

And unlike Otoya's little home, Castle Dran gave Taiga plenty of space to run and hide. The little boy - someday to be the Fangire King - did have a knack for art, but not for staying still, and since he and Maya had to teach him the things a schoolchild would normally learn, they both got a bit of exercising.

"You're setting a bad example for your little brother," Maya said gently as Otoya walked into the room. Otoya could see Wataru toddling around, not understanding what was being said at all. He seemed more fascinated by Sagarc, which technically belonged to his brother but wasn't useful at all. Well, sometimes it was, when it allowed Wataru to use it to learn to walk, just like it had Taiga. Wataru babbled at Sagarc in ancient Fangire, though Otoya wondered if he even knew what language he was speaking.

Taiga pouted, and Otoya got down on one knee. "Your mother's right, you know," he said gently. "He is your little brother. You need to be good for him."

The boy made a face at that, but looked at Wataru, who was now trying to shake Sagarc like a toy.

"Okay," Taiga said finally, and slowed down. Otoya sighed inwardly, thankful that Wataru was there. Taiga would be good for his little brother, when all else failed.

After Taiga left the room, Otoya went to liberate Sagarc from Wataru's questing fingers. "Somehow," he said, "This is not what I had in mind when I said that your son is mine...."

Maya laughed, the sound bringing joy to Otoya's heart and making him regret none of it. "But it's still something you wouldn't trade for the world, isn't it?"

"True," Otoya said, gathering his son up. "Very true." Wataru babbled at him in Fangire, and he made faces at the boy. He wouldn't trade Wataru, Taiga, or Maya for the world.
