"Wataru, I'm pleased with your progress," Taiga said warmly. "How do you feel about your grasp of the language?"
Wataru relaxed against the cushions. "I feel better about it," he admitted. Trying to learn the tongue that the Sagarcs used made both his brain and his mouth sore.
"You're doing really well," Taiga praised. "I'm sure you're glad you're able to communicate with Sagarc better."
Wataru looked at the Sagarc that had started living with him ever since she'd had her baby. Her baby, in the meantime, was ducking around in his shirt. "I hope so," he said, unsure about that.
"Sagarc says lots of good things about your attempts to master the language," Taiga said to him. "Which is good, because once you've mastered it, I have a job for you."
"A job?" Wataru asked, not sure if he liked the prospect. "What kind of job would require me mastering the language?"
"Well, ever since you talked that Sagarc out of committing property damage," Taiga said, "I've been talking to the Eldest of the Sagarc people about keeping their people in line. And they really like you, Wataru."
"But I don't speak it that well, Nii-san," Wataru said. "I got lucky...."
"Your ancestors have been speaking to Sagarcs for ages," Taiga said. "And Sagarc likes you."
"Hey," Kivat protested. "He's Kiva. How can he be a diplomat to the Sagarcs?"
"Because I say so, and the Eldest agree," Taiga said. "I want Wataru to master the language so that he can sort out occasional... mishaps between Fangire and Sagarc."
"Hrumph." Kivat's tone said exactly how he felt about that development; that was, he wasn't keen on it at all.
"So, I'm... a diplomat?" Wataru asked, trying to let that wander through his head.
"Eventually," Taiga said warmly. "I'm sure you'll do well at it. They like you."
Sagat continued to zap around in Wataru's shirt. "Are you sure?"
"I'm completely sure," Taiga told him. "Don't worry. You'll do fine."
Wataru took a deep breath. "I don't feel all that confident," he admitted.
"You will. In fact, I'm going to take you down next weekend to go meet them," Taiga said. "I'm sure you'll do just fine."
Wataru had a nightmare image of him getting before the Sagarc Eldest and completely forgetting every word of the language. Which would be bad if he planned to work with them. And he did want to work with them. He actually rather liked the Sagarcs, Kivat's protests notwithstanding.
"B-but," Wataru said, half-hoping he could get out of it.
"And if you forget everything you've learned, the Sagarcs *do* understand Japanese and I'll be there."
Shivering, Wataru wondered when Taiga could read minds. "B-but."
"I know you too well," Taiga said. "You're worried. Don't be." He gave Wataru a warm smile. "Everything will be fine."
Wataru wished he'd shared his brother's confidence. He didn't himself feel like he would come out well at all.
"And if all goes well, there's a place in the countryside near the Sagarc's central home that you can move to," Taiga said with enthusiasm. "At the rate you attract Sagarcs, Wataru, it's probably be best. Besides, that'll give your Sagat a lot of room to roam in."
Sagarc mentioned how she'd make sure the baby stayed safe. "We both will," Kivat said gruffly, his love for his baby obvious.
"I... I guess I can try," Wataru said dubiously.
"You'll be fine," Taiga said. "You'll see." He paused. "Now, shall we work on it again?"
Wataru nodded, mentally preparing to speak.
