amazonstorm's Paradise Lost universe. Rated 8+
Summary: Taiga doesn't let them be themselves.
Dying Inside Little By Little
By EstiRose
C 2009
Mio could cry, sometimes.
She is the Fangire Queen, bride to the Fangire King, in a world where her kind rules. Despite the terror, the people of Japan love their celebrities, and that makes them celebrities. The public wants to know about their lives, about everything.
She wishes she could confide in Wataru-san. But she never gets a chance to be with Wataru-san. Taiga is always with them, and she doesn't want to tell Taiga about how she feels because Taiga would just smile at her and not understand. She wishes Wataru-san was free, but he is not. Taiga tells her when they're alone on how worried he is about Wataru-san, and how relieved he was that the whole thing gave him an excuse to keep close tabs on his younger brother.
But he doesn't seem to notice that she's having a nervous breakdown. He doesn't seem to notice that his Queen doesn't enjoy the spotlight, doesn't enjoy the duties, wants to go back to being Suzuki Mio, the clumsy waitress. The girl that was nothing.
The girl that might be nothing still.
But at least that girl would have had a chance. Wataru-san was Fangire; she could have loved Wataru-san, had children in a few decades, been happy. But instead, she has to hunt in Fangire form because her human one is too well known, and Taiga wants the humans to admire the Fangire even as the Fangire use them as food.
Wataru-san, who sometimes makes noises about it being unfair, is just smiled at by Taiga too and told that it's ridiculous. That it's heretical, but since Wataru-san is being good and acting like the little brother he should, Taiga will let it pass.
She doesn't know if Taiga sees how much it's killing Wataru-san too, to be like this. Taiga doesn't let his little brother out of his sight much because he's worried that Wataru-san will rebel if he doesn't and he's afraid of losing his little brother. But sometimes she can see that Wataru-san is irritated, and sometimes it seems like he's losing hope like she is. Taiga has already introduced him to the public as his little brother; Wataru-san has as much privacy as she does.
Taiga loves, but Taiga loves too much. Taiga wants the best for them and thinks the best way to do that is systematically overprotecting both of them. He doesn't want his Queen risking herself; he wants his little brother to be safe. But in doing so, he doesn't let go. He doesn't let them be themselves.
And so they both die inside, from the King's love, because he cannot let go.
