I'm sick, I'm snuffly, but I'm writing again!
It's another installment in the "Sweet as Sweet Can Be" universe, set as Taiga's about 10 and Wataru's 8. Some spoilers for late (39+) Kiva, rated 8+.
"Mom, I'm hungry," Taiga complained, and Maya smiled at him.
"Already?" Otoya asked, looking at his adopted son. "Didn't you feed him yesterday, Maya?"
"He's a growing boy, Otoya, he needs Energy to grow," Maya chided gently. "So does Wataru." It was hard to take offense at her gentle chiding; and yet he was reminded once more that the love of his life and sons were Fangire (or part, in Wataru's case). She drew Taiga up to her. "Soon he'll be hunting on his own, though."
Otoya shivered a bit, but had to admit that he couldn't force Maya or their kids to starve. "Ah."
"Okay, Taiga, you know what mama wants you to do?" Maya asked her son.
Taiga nodded seriously, and two spike-like Fangs appeared above his head, and a pattern on his face.
"Good Taiga." She patted him on the head. "Here's your food."
The Fangs continued floating for a few moments before disappearing. Taiga smiled up at his mother and bowed before getting up and racing off.
"Ten years, and I'll never get used to that," he said smoothly. At least Wataru didn't need to feed nearly that often; Maya estimated that he'd need to feed about once a month once he was grown. Until then, she'd made it clear that Otoya would just have to live with Maya feeding for three... two, once Taiga was old enough to find his own prey.
"It's criminals," Maya said with a smile. "The best I could find. Embezzlers, young robbers. Healthy for our boys, and better for your society. Who says I don't adapt for you?" She kissed him, and he kissed her back.
"I guess I could live with that," he said. "If Yuri hadn't come into my life, I'd have never thought I'd love someone who feeds on humans." And Maya had told him before, and he shouldn't really object, given it was criminals. He just still did.
"If you couldn't, I'd leave you," she said. But she said it in a way which she thought he wouldn't, and she was right; he loved her. Plus, he wanted Taiga to think out of the box, and since he thought out of the box, if he could pass that along to Taiga, then something good might happen for humans and Fangire.
"You don't have to worry about that," he reassured her. "I'm still as much in love with you as the day I realized that you were the one who understood me best."
She smiled back at him as Wataru tumbled in the room. "Mom, I want to feed too," he said. Otoya made a face; Wataru was in his "whatever big brother does I want to do" phase, which meant that Wataru probably fed more than he had to, and Maya didn't stop him.
"And do you want to show me your fangs too?" Maya asked gently. "Because," she told him, lifting him up gently, "I'm sure you're all right. Human food keeps you mostly fed, Wataru."
"Then I'll just show you my fangs!" Wataru proclaimed proudly.
Maya carried him over to the couch. "Then show me your fangs," she said to him, smiling.
Wataru grinned, and concentrated. Suddenly a pair of fangs, far more fancy than Taiga's, formed over his head. His were far more like horns; Maya didn't know Wataru's Fangire form, but she wasn't too worried about what form his fangs took, apparently, from what she'd told him.
"Very good, Wataru," Maya told their son gently. "Now, put them away like a good boy and go and join your brother."
Wataru nodded with a smile and jumped off the couch, running off in Taiga's direction.
"He's growing up so fast," Maya said as she watched him. "But I'm sure he'll turn out a lot more like you than like me. He has your patterning, after all."
His patterning. He apparently had one when he'd assumed Dark Kiva, and Maya had said that the colors were orange and yellow; Taiga's and Maya's ran to blues and purples, and Wataru's were red, orange, and yellow with a touch of green. Fall colors.
Maya liked to tease him about his patterning just as she forbid him to ever assume Dark Kiva ever again. She'd loved him too much to ever let him die like that, and had kept Kivat away from him. He didn't care; if his family was threatened, he'd take up those patterns, that bat, that power again, and he'd save them.
Wataru had his patterns, and Wataru was his son. Otoya wasn't afraid for the future.
