Tadokoro shifted, trying to find a position where he'd be in the least amont of pain. He had gone into the Zecter test trying to buy Kagami some time before he was forced into his role as Gatack's host, and the only reason it worked had been because Kagami had been in the midst of transfering from Shadow. However, he hadn't expected Gatack to be so... violent. Not expected the Zecter to attack him. It should have sensed what he was and stood down.
He had ordered Misaki to keep Kagami far from any notice until the humans in ZECT could process his resignation. It would have forced his kind to find a new way to recruit the young man. However, from what Misaki had said, it was too late; the special unit made up of his own kind had escorted Kagami away, destination unknown.
Except he knew exactly where they were going. Kagami would be introduced to his Zecter and be Gatack's host before Tadokoro got out of the hospital.
He'd tried to save Kagami from his fate, but it looked like Kagami was on track to fulfil his destiny, whether Tadokoro liked it or not.
The door to his room slid open, and Tadokoro instinctively looked over to see who was coming in. To his surprise, it was Negishi. Their "liaison" to the humans was looking grim, and Tadokoro's first thought was of Kagami. Had he had time to go into his first battle as Gatack, and been killed as a result? He knew they were eager to put him into action.
"What happened?" he asked, fearing the worst.
"Gatack didn't bond to Kagami Arata," Negishi said, settling himself down in a chair. "You wouldn't have had anything to do with that, would you?"
Tadokoro was surprised, but he tried to not let it show on his face. "No. I disagreed with his fate, but I wouldn't do that."
"You tried to before," Negishi said. "I know you wanted to change him with the jewelry."
"I thought about it, briefly." He had, and then Negishi had warned him off. "But I know his destiny."
Negishi looked at him, and nodded slightly. "Gatack, as you know, has been behaving erratically. Attacking potential hosts, attacking you... and now attacking Kagami Arata."
That made Tadokoro blink in surprise. "Attacking... Kagami?" It made no sense. A Zecter might abandon its preferred host, but attack its chosen one?
"Fortunately, he's not critically injured," Negishi said, "But he'll stay unconscious until we figure out what went wrong."
"If you keep him unconscious for too long, he'll be suspicious," Tadokoro pointed out.
"He never does," Negishi said. "We'll just tell him he was worse off than he actually is, and he'll believe us."
The sad thing was, Negishi was probably right. Kagami was altered; he might have been altered to make him more obedient to their own kind, and made to trust the word of his doctors. The same might be true of his obedience to Tadokoro himself, in his usual still-maturing way; if Kagami had been altered to sense and trust their kind instinctively, then he would believe his doctors.
Tendou Souji had not had that alteration. He had guessed that they'd managed to get some work done on him, but not much compared to what they'd done to Kagami. On the other hand, maybe they had. Maybe Tendou was altered as much as Kagami seemed to be.
"We'll figure it out, I promise you," Negishi said. "We made him, we made it, we can figure out what went on."
Tadokoro was wise enough to keep his mouth shut. There was still hope for Kagami; once Kagami could receive visitors, he'd nudge Kagami, remind him subtly about his resignation. Kagami didn't deserve to be treated like he was, being an object, a weapon. Kagami was a young human, albeit altered. The council would have to go to the same lengths to pull him in as they were having to do with Tendou Souji.
He wondered why Tendou wasn't being brought in by one of their own kind. Maybe he hadn't had the loyalty alteration that Kagami had had. Or maybe they'd wanted Kagami and Tendou to bond so badly that they hadn't dared.
Maybe once Kagami was a host they would dare. Of course, if he managed to get Kagami to leave, Tendou would probably get a Native liaison anyway, because Kagami would be a civilian.
Of course, Tadokoro had a bad feeling that the moment Kagami really tried to resign, his own people and ZECT would find a way to force him back in just long enough to bond him to Gatack.
"Kagami wants to leave ZECT, maybe that's why the Zecter rejected him," he said, feeling that contributing would probably help make Negishi think he was harmless. "Maybe that's why it's so violent."
"Gatack doesn't work that way," Negishi said. "It showed every sign of being ready to bond. All we should have had to do is bring Kagami Arata to it. His feelings shouldn't have mattered."
While Tadokoro knew that Kagami was essential to their plans, he felt rankled that the young man's feelings didn't matter, especially since they'd insisted on not really preparing him for what he had to do. A being willing to fight made a better fighter.
"Anyway," Negishi said, getting up, "We'll figure it out. Just be ready, because I'm sure he'll be needing your guidance." He gave Tadokoro a warning look, a reminder that as far as Negishi was concerned, Tadokoro was not to be completely trusted.
Enough to be used as a sounding board, at least. He hoped that they'd figure out the problem, just long enough that Tadokoro could let Kagami resign.
Negishi was right not to trust him.
